When Sustainability Isn’t Sustainable

I found this article, about the closing of a restaurant in Berkeley, to be very interesting. Sad, too.

My Trip to France, part 1

As previously stated, I went to France with my parents, my brother, and his wife, from May 29th to June 8th. It was a great trip. Many things to tell.
It started with a little drama, thanks to an overly helpful gate agent at SFO. I get to SLC, and pull out the boarding pass for [...]

A perfect article for synesthetes

If writing about music is like dancing about architecture, then cooking about music is like … (?)
From today’s Chronicle, an article about the playlists in the kitchens of top Bay Area restaurants. Yum.

Why are taco trucks so good?

There was a taco truck parked on my block (there’s construction crews all around the lake), and I just got a burrito. It was so good. Why was it so good? Why is it always so good? What is so alchemical about a tortilla filled with stuff that comes from a moving vehicle?

It’s happening in Oakland

Okay, we Oaklanders have a chip on our shoulder about citysnobism. Think Brooklyn v. Manhattan. We loves us some Oakland. We enjoy going to the city for fun, but we also enjoy fuming at of our SF friends who go months or years without setting foot on the sunny side of the bay. The SF [...]

Grand Lake Farmer’s Market

Just came back from the Grand Lake Farmer’s Market, and I’m so happy I just have to share my joy.
There are a couple things I always get – a bag of organic mixed greens and some avocados. (or is that avocadoes, Mr. Quayle?)
Then I got some things that are specifically in season – some gorgeous [...]

Film Review, and another edition of One Year Ago Today

Duplicity: A solid A. I’m a sucker for this kind of film. I suppose you could have a minor beef in that Julia Roberts essentially plays Julia Roberts and Clive Owen essentially plays Clive Owen, but hey, I like those guys, and I liked this movie. I think it works well.
Avocado Margarita at Cocina Poblano [...]

RIP Parkway

One of the coolest places on earth, and one of the things that makes Oakland Oakland is closing its doors next week. Don’t know why. It looks like they’re keeping the Cerrito open. I can’t walk there, but I’m sure I’ll be checking it out. The Parkway will be missed.

Miscellaneous Reviews

1. The International. A- Somehow I missed in all the marketing materials that this movie was directed by Tom Twykker. That’s an added bonus. I would have gone to see it anyway because I’m a sucker for this type of movie, and Run Clive Run doesn’t disappoint. Well, unless you require moral clarity, in which [...]

Movie Review: Elegy

Have been apartment hunting in Oakland today. Had some late afternoon showings, and I didn’t want to be driving back to San Jose in peak commute times if it could be avoided, so I headed to Piedmont Avenue, one of my favorite old stomping grounds, and discovered:
1) a new and kick-ass newstand with a great [...]
