When Sustainability Isn’t Sustainable
I found this article, about the closing of a restaurant in Berkeley, to be very interesting. Sad, too.

Today I revisited one of my favorite hikes: Stinson Beach to Mt. Tam’s Pantoll Ranger Station and back to Stinson Beach on a different trail. On my way back to Oakland, I decide to stop by the REI in Berkeley; I wanted to check out bear cannisters since I’m probably doing a High Sierra hike [...]
If writing about music is like dancing about architecture, then cooking about music is like … (?)
From today’s Chronicle, an article about the playlists in the kitchens of top Bay Area restaurants. Yum.
Yes indeed. One year ago today, I was at the halfway point of the trail, eating a half gallon of Hershey’s Peanut Butter Cup in one sitting. Also there: Tourist, who finished his half gallon in 17 minutes, Cricket, who wasn’t even going to do the challenge, then proceeded to eat the half gallon and [...]
That’s Californian for “It’s warm.” It is. But it is – in fact – earthquakes that I have on my mind. I thought this article was interesting; it kinda captures what happens here. I was in the supermarket, and I felt it. Just barely, but I felt that unmistakable it. I looked around, and not [...]
There was a taco truck parked on my block (there’s construction crews all around the lake), and I just got a burrito. It was so good. Why was it so good? Why is it always so good? What is so alchemical about a tortilla filled with stuff that comes from a moving vehicle?
Okay, we Oaklanders have a chip on our shoulder about citysnobism. Think Brooklyn v. Manhattan. We loves us some Oakland. We enjoy going to the city for fun, but we also enjoy fuming at of our SF friends who go months or years without setting foot on the sunny side of the bay. The SF [...]
Just came back from the Grand Lake Farmer’s Market, and I’m so happy I just have to share my joy.
There are a couple things I always get – a bag of organic mixed greens and some avocados. (or is that avocadoes, Mr. Quayle?)
Then I got some things that are specifically in season – some gorgeous [...]
I have a lot of very smart friends. That’s why I think it’s funny that it took four e-mails for me to explain to an unnamed friend that even though I am turning 37, the upcoming year would in fact be my “38th year” not my 37th year. It’s a common mistake.
Looking forward to dinner [...]
One of the coolest places on earth, and one of the things that makes Oakland Oakland is closing its doors next week. Don’t know why. It looks like they’re keeping the Cerrito open. I can’t walk there, but I’m sure I’ll be checking it out. The Parkway will be missed.
