Does Barry Manilow Know You Raided His Wardrobe?

Much like the characters in Not Another Teen Movie, I attended John Hughes High School. For the record, I identified in some way with all of the characters in The Breakfast Club, but the one that I identified the most with was Andy. This surprises people, I know.

Anyway, RIP John Hughes. To say you will be missed is an incredible understatement.

As you might know, I identified with John Bender and Ally Sheedy’s characters more than the rest…

Odd, also, that one of my old flames looks more than a little bit like Molly Ringwald.

You certainly had an effect on MY life, Mr. Hughes. We will miss you.

I just had an e-mail exchange with my mom about this movie. It had a really big impact on my family. I should explain. In the eighties, before Netflix, before Blockbuster, even, we had a videotape player. And somehow we had gotten a copy of The Breakfast Club. It was the only videotape we had, I think. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I told you I had watched the movie a hundred times. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I told you I could probably recite the entire dialogue of the movie from start to finish.

So, I was reminded, it was because of my intimate knowledge of this movie that I finally understood what “time-compression” means when they do it to a movie on teevee. Sure, they cut a scene here and there, and obviously change swear-words. But one night, Breakfast Club comes on Bravo, and I start to do my John Hughes karaoke, and it’s all wrong. The rhythm is off. The cadence. It’s wrong. You see, when they time-compress a movie, they actually steal time from the pauses in-between words, in-between characters speaking. I never knew that, and probably never would have if I hadn’t stumbled upon Breakfast Club while clicking around one night. They steal the pauses! So they can sell you Bud Light and Orrick vacuum cleaners.

Somebody we knew with cable(we were such deprived kids… No cable!!)recorded the movie off of HBO or Showtime. I think I still have the old tape somewhere in the stack of VHS movies that no longer get watched… We also borrowed the VHS machine from Papa’s Film Lab at Vandy. That’s how we could watch ‘The Breakfast Club’ and ‘Das Boot’ backwards in real-time!

I remember the cable/VHS version being different from the one Mom and I saw in the theater(the old Cinema South on Nolensville Rd… How’s THAT for a flashback??).
